California License Plate Lookup /Inspection for Tags Renewal

Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in California?

Yes, smog inspections are required to renew vehicle tags in California for most vehicles. California mandates that vehicles registered in designated counties pass a biennial smog check before registration renewal can be completed. The state does not require safety inspections for passenger vehicles as part of the tag renewal process.

Smog inspections apply to vehicles registered in 34 California counties, including major metropolitan areas. Vehicles must be tested every two years, typically in conjunction with registration renewal. The California Smog Check Program uses emission standards established under Health and Safety Code Section 44000 to reduce vehicle-related air pollution. Upon successful renewal, California issues a registration sticker that must be affixed to the top corner of the rear license plate.

Exemptions and Special Circumstances

California implements an exemption for certain vehicles from smog inspection requirements:

  • Gasoline-powered vehicles manufactured in 1975 or earlier
  • Diesel-powered vehicles manufactured in 1997 or earlier, or with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 14,000 pounds
  • Electric vehicles
  • Natural gas-powered vehicles weighing more than 14,000 pounds
  • Gasoline-powered vehicles less than eight model years old (subject to smog abatement fee instead)
  • Motorcycles and trailers
